CHRONIC OVEREXPOSURE TO IRON OXIDE FUME OR DUST HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH A BENIGN LUNG CONDITION CALLED SIDEROSIS, OR IRON PIGMENTATION WHICH DOES NOT RESULT IN ILLNESS. ANIMAL STUDIES INDICATE THAT THE IRON OXIDE DUST DOES NOT CAUSE LUNG IMPAIRMENT OR FIBROSIS. HOWEVER, WORKERS EXPOSED TO IRON OXIDE FUME IN THE PRESENCE OF SILICA MAY DEVELOP MIXED DUST PNEUMOCONIOSIS. DIRECT CONTACT WITH DUST OR FUME MAY RESULT IN BURNS TO SKIN AND EYES AND MAY PRODUCE DAMAGE.

Primary Routes of Exposure:

Acute Overexposure Effects:
Contact with the
eyes and skin may result in mechanical irritation.
Inhalation may
result in respiratory irritation.
Ingestion may
result in gastric
disturbances.
Chronic Overexposure Effects:
Chronic
overexposure to iron oxide fume or dust has been associated
with x-ray
changes of the lungs; however, it does not result in
illness.
Changes are due to a benign lung condition called
siderosis, or
iron pigmentation. Animal
studies indicate that
chronic
overexposure to iron oxide dust does not cause lung
impairment or
fibrosis. However,
workers exposed to iron oxide fume
in the presence
of silica may develop mixed dust pneumoconiosis.
Direct contact
with dust or fume may result in burns to the skin and
eyes and may
produce damage. There are no
other known chronic
effects associated with this
material.

dust could aggravate existing respiratory conditions.
